These projects aim to enhance regional connectivity, support industrial development, and improve socio-economic conditions in the project areas, making them relevant for UPSC GS3 preparation.
Overview The 101st meeting of the Network Planning Group (NPG) convened on November 7, 2025 , to assess infrastructure projects related to Roads, Transport & Highways, and Railways . The discussions centered on enhancing multimodal connectivity and improving logistics efficiency , aligning with the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan (PMGS NMP) . The projects were evaluated based on their conformity to the PM GatiShakti principles, including integrated multimodal infrastructure, last-mile connectivity, and a ‘Whole of Government’ approach. Key Developments Ministry of Road, Transport & Highways (MoRTH) Projects Rehabilitation and Upgradation of NH-160A from Ghoti to Palghar (Maharashtra) The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) proposed the rehabilitation and upgradation of National Highway 160A (NH-160A) from Ghoti to Palghar , covering a total length of 154.635 kilometers in Maharashtra . This corridor serves as a strategic alternate freight route connecting the industrial clusters of Nashik and adjoining MIDC areas to the western coastal ports, reducing dependence on routes through Nashik city. Strategic Importance: Alternate freight route connecting Nashik industrial clusters to western coastal ports. Benefits: Efficient port access, decongestion of urban corridors, and enhanced freight mobility. Intermodal Connectivity: Improved linkages with railheads (Nashik, Palghar, and Dahanu railway lines) and major highways (NH-60, NH-48, and NH-848). The upgradation is expected to deliver multiple benefits: Development of a high-capacity alternate freight corridor. Improved access to the Nashik Multi-Modal Logistics Park (MMLP). Faster transport of perishable goods. Promotion of tourism and MSME growth in regional centers. Development of 2-Lane with Paved Shoulder from Hiwarkhedi to Basinda-Roshni (Betul – Khandwa) & Ashapur to Rudhy (Betul – Khandwa) (Madhya Pradesh) MoRTH has proposed the development of a 2-lane carriageway with paved shoulders from Hiwarkhedi to Basinda–Roshni , and the widening of the existing 2-lane road to a 4-lane divided carriageway with paved shoulders from Deshgaon to Julwaniya in Madhya Pradesh . The corridor covers approximately 300 kilometers . Strategic Importance: Enhances interstate connectivity, linking cities across Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Rajasthan. Connectivity: Improves regional linkages with major urban centers such as Udaipur, Ahmedabad, Nashik, and Indore. Benefits: Provides an alternate and shorter route between Nagpur and Vadodara, facilitating efficient freight and passenger traffic. The project is expected to boost regional trade, enhance logistics efficiency, and support industrial development by strengthening connectivity between production centers, markets, and ports. Ministry of Railways (MoR) Projects 3rd & 4th line from Gamharia to Chandil (Jharkhand) The Ministry of Railways has proposed the construction of a 3rd and 4th railway line between Gamharia and Chandil in Jharkhand , spanning 56 kilometers . Objective: To address severe congestion in the existing Kandra–Chandil section, which is operating at 130% capacity utilization. Strategic Importance: Critical freight route facilitating the movement of iron ore and raw materials from the Chakradharpur Division to steel plants. Benefits: Smoother and more efficient train operations, supporting the industrial supply chain and mineral logistics across eastern India. UPSC Relevance These infrastructure projects are highly relevant for the UPSC Civil Services Exam , particularly for GS Paper 3 (Infrastructure, Economic Development) and GS Paper 2 (Government Policies and Interventions) . They highlight the government's focus on improving connectivity, logistics, and regional development through strategic infrastructure investments.
