The ABDM follows a Privacy by Design approach. There is no centralised health data repository; data exchange occurs only after explicit patient consent. Before any digital health app joins ABDM, it must pass a sandbox and undergo a WASA audit.
Interoperability is achieved by adopting common health data standards and linking the four core registries (individuals, facilities, professionals, and other components). This enables disparate public and private digital platforms to share information securely.
