Coimbatore MSMEs to explore opportunities in Indian Coast Guard component requirements
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has partnered with CODISSIA to boost defence innovation and indigenisation, aiming to integrate MSMEs into the supply chain for defence equipment. This initiative includes the development of digital infrastructure and highlights the importance of self-reliance in shipbuilding.
Overview The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Coimbatore District Small Industries Association (CODISSIA) Defence Innovation & Atal Incubation Centre (CDIIC) . This partnership, announced at the ‘Shipbuilding, Indigenisation and IT Conference’ in Madikeri, seeks to bolster the defence innovation ecosystem and accelerate indigenisation efforts within the country. Key Developments Partnership Details MoU Signing: The ICG and CDIIC have formalized their collaboration to enhance defence innovation. Objective: The primary goal is to strengthen the defence innovation ecosystem and promote indigenisation. MSME Involvement: The tie-up will enable MSMEs in Coimbatore to participate in supplying components for defence equipment used by the ICG. ICG's Initiatives Self-Reliance: The ICG emphasizes the strategic importance of self-reliance in shipbuilding through indigenous design and resilient supply chains. Indigenous Vessel: The 200th indigenously built vessel, the fourth Pollution Control Ship, is currently undergoing sea trials. Project Digital Coast Guard: A long-term initiative to create a secure, scalable, and resilient digital backbone for all ICG units. E-book Release: The ICG released the e-book ‘History of Shipbuilding in the Indian Coast Guard’. AI Roadmap: A roadmap for Artificial Intelligence in ICG was also released. CODISSIA's Role Capability Mapping: A team from the ICG will visit Coimbatore to conduct capability mapping of local industries. Support to Units: Identified units will be supported to supply to the Defence sector. Potential Supplier: Coimbatore is seen as a potential supplier for components needed for indigenously built ships. Startup Ecosystem: CDIIC currently hosts 43 startups working on Defence and other areas. Indigenisation Products: CDIIC has 78 defence products for indigenisation, with 20 developed on a no-cost basis.
