India, as the chair of BRICS for 2026, will hold the Sixteenth BRICS Health Ministers’ Meeting in Chandigarh from 22‑24 July 2026. The three‑day programme brings together health ministers and senior officials from eleven member countries to discuss health security, pandemic preparedness, digital health, and equitable access to care.
Key Developments

- Health Ministers’ Meeting on 23 July, chaired by Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda, to adopt the Sixteenth BRICS Health Ministers’ Declaration.
- High‑level side event on 24 July titled “BRICS Dialogue: From Digital Health Records to AI‑Enabled Healthcare”, focusing on interoperable data infrastructure and responsible AI.

- The meeting follows a series of 26 technical meetings held since 15 April 2026 covering nine priority areas.
- New priority areas introduced: BRICS Mission for Healthy Lifestyle and Promotion of Mental Wellness.
- Existing priority areas: Health security, pandemic preparedness, Digital Health, TCIM, TB research network, regulatory collaboration, early warning systems, and public health institute network.
- The agenda aligns with the overarching theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”.
Exam Relevance
The meeting illustrates India’s role in multilateral health diplomacy, a key topic for GS 1 (Society & Social Justice) and GS 2 (International Relations). Understanding the nine priority areas helps answer questions on global health governance, pandemic response, and the push for Universal Health Coverage. The focus on Digital Health and AI links to emerging technology trends in public health, relevant for GS 3 (Technology & Economy). The involvement of the Union Health Secretary and the Ministry of Ayush highlights inter‑ministerial coordination, a point for governance questions.
Way Forward
- Implementation of the agreed declaration through regular monitoring mechanisms.
- Strengthening the public health institute network for rapid response to health emergencies.
- Scaling up digital health infrastructure and ensuring ethical AI use.
- Promoting preventive health through the new lifestyle and mental wellness missions, thereby reducing disease burden and moving closer to UHC across BRICS nations.
