Overview
The Union Minister of Coal and Mines, G. Kishan Reddy, has requested Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to take immediate action against illegal constructions encroaching upon the Warangal Fort. This fort is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). The Minister emphasized the need for immediate eviction of encroachers in a letter sent on Tuesday.
Historical Significance of Warangal Fort
In his letter, Mr. Kishan Reddy highlighted the historical importance of the Warangal Fort. Built during the Kakatiya period, the fort was strategically designed with seven fortification walls to protect the capital from invasions. The fort's resilience against attacks by the Delhi Sultans and the Hyderabad Nizams underscores its significance as a symbol of the Kakatiya rulers' valour and strength.
Encroachment Issues and ASI's Response
During a recent visit, Mr. Kishan Reddy observed several unauthorised constructions encroaching upon the fort area. The ASI has repeatedly issued notices, emphasizing that Warangal Fort is a protected monument and that encroachment and unauthorised construction on its land are offences under the law. Encroachers have been directed to vacate the land.
Lack of Action and Incorrect Land Records
Despite letters sent to the Warangal District Collector since 2022, effective action to remove the encroachments or safeguard the fort lands has not been taken. Mr. Reddy also pointed out that forest land within the area has been incorrectly recorded as government land instead of ASI property. In October last year, ASI officials requested joint field inspections from the District Collector.
Current Status and Central Government Initiatives
Recent inspections revealed that portions of the earthen wall surrounding the fort have been encroached upon for new constructions. The fort is a popular tourist destination, and the Central government has recently installed a sound-and-light show at the site. The government is also taking steps to protect the monument.
Call for Action and Cooperation
Mr. Kishan Reddy urged the Chief Minister to act against the encroachers and extend full cooperation to the ASI for the protection and preservation of the historical monument. He emphasized the importance of preserving this historical site for future generations.
