On the eve of winding down, BBMP serves notices to 2.75 lakh property tax defaulters totalling to ₹786.86 crore — UPSC Current Affairs | September 1, 2025
On the eve of winding down, BBMP serves notices to 2.75 lakh property tax defaulters totalling to ₹786.86 crore
The BBMP’s notice to 2.75 lakh defaulters for ₹786.86 crore underscores the fiscal strain on urban local bodies and the push for digital tax recovery mechanisms. This development is highly relevant for UPSC aspirants studying municipal finance, decentralisation, and e‑governance under GS‑3 and GS‑2.
On the eve of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) winding down, the civic body on Monday issued notices to 2.75 lakh properties who have not paid tax dues for several years. The demand notices sent electronically on Monday amount to ₹786.86 crore. Munish Moudgil, Special Commissioner (Revenue), BBMP said these tax defaulters can pay their dues online, failing which the civic body will take measures to auction their movable and immovable properties to recover the dues. Meanwhile, tax defaulters who have got a notice can also appeal against the notice online at https://BBMPeNyaya.karnataka.gov.in , BBMP said in a statement. With five corporations set to come into existence on Tuesday, these tax dues will likely be distributed among the corporations based on the area in which these properties are, sources said.
