Police book 5 guest lecturers of Bangalore University for harassing woman colleague
A police case was registered on September 8 against five guest lecturers of Bangalore University for alleged sexual harassment, blackmail and threats against a 30‑year‑old woman faculty member. The incident highlights gaps in campus safety, implementation of IPC provisions and broader societal attitudes towards gender‑based violence, offering multiple angles for UPSC prelims, mains and essay preparation.
The Jnanabharathi Police have registered a case against five guest lecturers for allegedly harassing their woman colleague at Bangalore University. Based on a complaint filed by the 30-year-old victim, the police on September 8 registered a case against, Swaroop Kumar, Ramanjaneya B. K., Rangaswamy, Jagannatha K., and Shivaray, charging them under sections 75 (sexual harassment), 79 (insult a woman’s modesty), 351 (criminal intimidation), and 352 (intentional insult with the intent to provoke a breach of peace) against the accused for further investigation. The victim, in her complaint, alleged that Kumar and Ramanjaneya mentally harassed her. She reportedly lost her job because of rumours and fake news spread about her by the duo, the complaint claimed. The victim also alleged that she was once forced to snatch Kumar’s phone while the latter was video-recording her in order to blackmail her. When she confronted the accused, they allegedly abused her and blackmailed her for sexual favours. The accused also threatened to kill her if she did not give in to their demands, she claimed. Following this, the victim approached the police and filed a complaint.
