Overview Neelam Shami Rao , Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, has urged the Indian sericulture industry to focus on silk marketing, brand positioning, value creation, and expansion of domestic and global markets. This call to action was made during the opening day of a two-day Directors’ Conference of Sericulture Practicing States and Union Territories. Key Developments Strategies for the Sericulture Industry Bridging the Demand-Supply Gap: Industry stakeholders are encouraged to work towards bridging the gap between the demand and supply of silk by maintaining consistent quality standards and strengthening testing mechanisms. Building Consumer Trust: Efforts are needed to build consumer trust in Indian silk products. Increasing Production: Focus on increasing the overall production of silk. Silk Mark Authentication Silk Mark authentication has been instrumental in enhancing the credibility and value of Indian silks in both domestic and global markets. This certification helps consumers identify genuine silk products, thereby boosting confidence and demand. Seri Tourism Recent initiatives such as Seri Tourism at Manasbal in Jammu and Kashmir are providing an extra boost to the industry by attracting tourists and showcasing silk production processes. Climate Mapping The heat (climate) mapping of sericulture clusters and districts reflects the Ministry’s commitments towards spreading silk farming countrywide, a privilege not currently available for many other natural fibres. This initiative aims to identify suitable regions for silk farming and promote its expansion. Karnataka's Role Technology Adoption K.N. Ravi , Joint Director, Department of Sericulture, Karnataka, highlighted that the adoption of technology and the introduction of e-markets in Karnataka have been beneficial for all key stakeholders in the industry, including farmers, reelers, and bidders. Production Targets Karnataka, the lead player in the sericulture industry, accounting for over 40% of the country’s total silk production, has a mandate to produce 14,150 tonnes of raw silk by March 2026 , as against 13,276 tonnes it produced in the previous year. Land and Production Statistics Land under Mulberry Cultivation: The State has 1,18,000 hectares of land under mulberry cultivation. Sericulture Farmers: Approximately 1,48,500 sericulture farmers are involved in silk production. Cocoon Production: They produced 93,624 tonnes of cocoon during the last financial year. Raw Silk Production: The State produced 13,276 tonnes of raw silk during the last financial year. Cocoon Markets Karnataka has a total of 40 cocoon markets , of which 16 are seed markets and 24 are commercial markets operated by the government.
