This is a landmark expansion of India's social security net, recognizing the 'silver tsunami' (aging population). By removing income barriers for those 70+, the scheme avoids the 'exclusion errors' common in BPL-based targeting. A critical feature is the top-up for existing PM-JAY families and the option for those on private/other public insurance to switch. However, the fixed 5-lakh cover may be insufficient for complex geriatric surgeries, and the lack of dedicated geriatric wards in empanelled hospitals remains a supply-side bottleneck.
The Ayushman Vaya Vandana Card is a step towards 'Healthy Ageing'. Discuss the socio-economic implications of this scheme.
Ideal for answers on 'Welfare of Vulnerable Sections' and 'Healthcare for Elderly'. It reflects India's commitment to Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and the shift towards a rights-based approach for senior citizens.
