PMGKAY has been the world's largest food security response to the pandemic. Its merger with NFSA in 2024 ensures long-term predictability for beneficiaries but imposes a significant fiscal burden (estimated at ₹11.8 lakh crore over 5 years). While it addresses 'calorie hunger', the focus on cereals (wheat/rice) alone does not address 'hidden hunger' (micronutrient deficiency). The exclusion of people without ration cards (the 'missing middle') remains a challenge despite the Supreme Court's directives to include more migrant workers.
The merger of PMGKAY with the National Food Security Act (NFSA) is a step towards universal food security but raises concerns about fiscal sustainability and nutritional diversity. Discuss.
