Overview The Karnataka Hate Speech and Hate Crimes (Prevention) Bill was tabled in the Assembly on Wednesday , aiming to prescribe penalties and imprisonment for hate crimes. Key Provisions of the Bill Definition of Hate Crime: The Bill defines hate crime as communication of hate speech that causes disharmony, hatred, or ill-will against any person or group. Punishment: Committing a hate crime can lead to imprisonment for a term not less than one year , extending to seven years , along with a fine of ₹50,000 for the first offense. Subsequent Offenses: Repeat offenders may face imprisonment from two to ten years and a fine of ₹1,00,000 . Victim Compensation: The Bill includes provisions for providing adequate compensation to victims of hate crimes. Opposition and Reactions Opposition members, especially from the BJP , vociferously opposed the Bill, expressing resentment and stating they would not allow its adoption. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar stated that the Bill is necessary to maintain peace and law and order in the State, emphasizing that hate speech is unacceptable in any civic society.
