It will advise on integrating biodiversity into agriculture, seed sector regulations under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002, and on international collaborative research. The committee will support India's commitments under the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA). Important Facts The expert committee has been functional since 2005 and is reconstituted periodically to address emerging issues. Its recommendations influence policy on seed export, embryo trade, conventional breeding, and approval formats for collaborative projects under Section 5 of the Biological Diversity Act.
