Campus Biodiversity Register (CBR) Initiative
The NCF and the NBA have launched a year‑long, nation‑wide exercise to create a CBR for every higher‑education institution in India.

- Launch announced on 21 July 2026 by NCF’s programme manager Devica Ranade.
- Institutions can register for the project until November 2026.
- Data collection will conclude in June 2027.
- Observations will be recorded on three recognised citizen‑science platforms: iNaturalist, eBird and SeasonWatch.
Important Facts
College and university campuses act as green islands in rapidly expanding urban areas. Many host a rich mix of trees, birds, butterflies, insects, reptiles, mammals, fungi and other organisms. The CBR draws inspiration from the PBR, which records biodiversity at village, town and city levels. By focusing on campuses, the CBR fills a data gap and creates a baseline for future conservation actions.

- Use the compiled CBR to inform campus landscaping, waste‑management and environmental education programmes.
- Share findings with national and global biodiversity databases, thereby enhancing India’s contribution to global monitoring efforts.
Successful implementation will not only enrich scientific knowledge but also nurture a generation of environmentally‑aware citizens, a key objective of the Indian education system.
