The NM‑ICPS was launched in 2018 with a nine‑year outlay of Rs 3660 crore. Its aim is to build indigenous capability in emerging areas such as AI, IoT, robotics, cybersecurity, quantum tech and more.
Key Developments
- Twenty‑five TIHs have been set up across India.
- Four top‑performing TIHs were upgraded to TTRPs at IIT Kanpur, IISc Bengaluru, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad and IIT Indore.
- Launch of BharatGen, a consortium‑led generative‑AI programme at IIT Bombay, creating multilingual foundation models such as Param‑2 (17‑billion parameters) and speech‑to‑text/text‑to‑speech systems for 12‑22 Indian languages.
- Development of over 1100 technologies, 1300 technology products and incubation of 1130 start‑ups under the mission.
- Vertical focus on strategic sectors – Healthcare, Agriculture & Water, Mining, Cybersecurity and Mobility – each anchored by a lead TTRP/TIH.

- 5G‑Advanced ORAN Massive MIMO Radio Unit (32TR RU) from IIIT Bengaluru – enables high‑speed, low‑cost connectivity for remote regions.
- Smart Mining & Edge‑AI Monitoring from IIT (ISM) Dhanbad – provides reliable drone links up to 50 km for safe mining operations.
- AI‑enabled Smart Monitoring for Agriculture from IIT Bombay – combines AI and IoT to improve crop monitoring and decision‑making.
- BharatGen suite – builds sovereign AI models tailored to India’s linguistic diversity, supporting all 22 scheduled languages.
