Overview The Tamil Nadu Department of Environment, Climate Change and Forests has initiated the construction of the proposed International Bird Centre (IBC) at the Kazhuveli Bird Sanctuary in Villupuram’s Marakkanam. This project aims to enhance bird conservation awareness and promote eco-tourism in the region. Kazhuveli Lake: This site will feature bird-watching infrastructure, including an observatory and wetland zones. Landscape Design The landscape design, proposed by the Auroville Botanical Garden , will cover 10.65 acres for afforestation and 7.41 acres for landscaping. The design aims to create a living canvas that integrates seamlessly with the surrounding ecosystem, supporting diverse fauna. Visitor Experience Conservation Centre: Equipped with a scaled model of Kazhuveli Lake, interpretation display boards, multimedia experiential space, and digitally enabled stations. Bird Watching Infrastructure: Includes a 10.8-meter high bird watch tower with three levels, each providing approximately 450 sq. ft. of space. Electric Shuttles: Visitors will be transported between the Agaram forest and Kazhuveli Lake using electric shuttles. Significance of Kazhuveli Lake Kazhuveli Lake is a major wetland on the Coromandel Coast , connected to the Bay of Bengal by the Uppukalli Creek and the Yedayanthittu estuary . It lies along the Central Asian Flyway , making it a crucial nesting site for migratory birds. Second-largest brackish water wetland in Tamil Nadu Recognized as a potential Ramsar site Home to over 200 species of birds Serves as a stopover and breeding ground for about 40,000 migratory birds Biodiversity and Conservation The sanctuary is home to various bird species, including spot-billed pelicans, darters, cormorants, herons, egrets, black ibis, spoonbills, flamingos, common pochard, sandpipers, coots, shanks, and terns. Many of these species are categorized as ‘vulnerable’ or ‘near threatened’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) .
