Kerala Rail Development Corporation proposes extending Sabari rail to Thiruvananthapuram, Vizhinjam port — UPSC Current Affairs | January 3, 2026
Kerala Rail Development Corporation proposes extending Sabari rail to Thiruvananthapuram, Vizhinjam port
The Kerala Rail Development Corporation Ltd. (KRDCL) has proposed extending the Angamaly-Erumely Sabari line to Punalur and Thiruvananthapuram, connecting to the Vizhinjam international seaport. This initiative aims to improve connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, and promote sustainable transportation in Kerala, with potential benefits for the state's economy and environment.
Overview The Kerala Rail Development Corporation Ltd. (KRDCL) has recommended to the Kerala government a proposal to extend the proposed Angamaly-Erumely Sabari line to Punalur and further up to Thiruvananthapuram and the Vizhinjam international seaport . This initiative aims to enhance connectivity and reduce traffic congestion in the region. Background The Angamaly-Erumely Sabari line is a crucial rail project in Kerala, designed to improve transportation infrastructure. The extension to Punalur and Thiruvananthapuram is expected to further boost its impact by connecting key areas and facilitating cargo movement to and from the Vizhinjam seaport . Key Developments Proposal for DPR Preparation The proposal for preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the extension of the Sabari line to Punalur and further up to Thiruvananthapuram was initially taken up in the board meeting of KRDCL in 2021 . The decision was made to proceed with the DPR for the Erumeli-Punalur line after the defreezing of the Angamaly-Erumely Sabari Railway line . Government Consideration With the Kerala government's decision to proceed with the Angamaly-Erumely line , the proposal for conducting a feasibility study for the extension to Thiruvananthapuram is under consideration by the State, as communicated by KRDCL to the Kerala government. Railways' Survey The Railways had previously sanctioned a survey for the extension of the proposed Angamaly-Erumely Sabari line from Erumely to Thiruvananthapuram . A preliminary survey was conducted by the Railways in 2013 . However, the project was not pursued further due to a low rate of return at that time. Rationale for the Extension Traffic Scenario Changes According to the letter from KRDCL, the traffic scenario in Kerala has significantly changed since 2013 . The density of traffic in this sector has increased substantially. The travel time along the M.C. Road has increased considerably due to traffic congestion at various locations. Impact of Vizhinjam Seaport The cargo traffic from the Vizhinjam international seaport is expected to further exacerbate traffic on the M.C. Road . The proposed Punalur-Thiruvananthapuram new railway line is anticipated to be a transformative project for Kerala’s transport history, alleviating traffic congestion and reducing the carbon footprint in the sector. Proposed Alignment The alignment connecting 13 major towns/stations from Erumely to Balaramapuram will be approximately 160 km long, compared to the road alignment of 153 km . A key benefit of this alignment is that it will bring Nedumangad onto the rail map of Kerala, aligning with the Railways’ latest norms for connecting towns with a population of 50,000 or more to the rail network. Additional Benefits Higher Speed Potential: The new line can be designed for higher speeds compared to the existing line, as realignment of the existing line to increase speed is impractical due to numerous sharp curves. Rail Sagar Scheme: The feasibility of including this project under the Rail Sagar Scheme can be explored. UPSC Relevance This initiative is relevant to GS3: Infrastructure , focusing on the development of railway infrastructure and its impact on economic growth and regional connectivity. It also touches upon GS3: Environment by addressing the reduction of carbon footprint through sustainable transportation. Important Facts KRDCL: Kerala Rail Development Corporation Ltd.
