Supreme Court Rebukes West Bengal Chief Secretary for Communication Failure During Judges’ Gherao The apex court, hearing a suo motu case on the safety of judicial officers engaged in the SIR of electoral rolls in West Bengal, sharply criticised the state administration for its handling of a gherao that threatened the lives of judges. Seven judicial officers, including three women, were gheraoed by anti‑social elements at a BDO office in Kaliachowk, Maldah district at around 3:30 p.m.; the High Court’s request for urgent intervention was ignored until about 8:30 p.m. The bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant , Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice Vipul Pancholi described the conduct of the Home Secretary , the DGP , the Collector and the Superintendent of Police as “highly deplorable”. The Court directed the officials to appear virtually before it and to explain why central forces were not deployed despite the urgency.
