Bid to protect ‘Rice bowl of Vadakara’ as a community reserve
The Forest department is considering designating Cherandathur Chira as a community reserve to conserve its wetland ecosystem and biodiversity. This initiative aims to involve local communities in conservation efforts and promote sustainable livelihood programs, aligning with UPSC's focus on environment and sustainable development.
Overview The Social Forestry Division of the Forest department has initiated discussions to designate Cherandathur Chira , popularly known as the rice bowl of Vadakara , as a community reserve. This move aims to protect the region's rich biodiversity and promote sustainable practices. Key Developments Project Proposal A project report documenting the biodiversity features of the region will be prepared and submitted to the local administration and the Forest department authorities for further proceedings and approval. This report will serve as the foundation for the community reserve designation. Biodiversity Conservation The proposed project aims at conserving nearly 600 acres of wetland in Maniyur grama panchayat . This wetland serves as a crucial habitat for several migratory birds. A recent bird identification programme recorded over 80 bird species , including several rare migratory ones. Community Participation If local residents and administrators extend their support, a Haritha Samiti (green committee) will be formed with community participation. The Haritha Samiti will implement various conservation initiatives. Ecotourism and Sustainable Livelihoods With the community reserve status, priority will be given to promoting ecotourism projects. Sustainable livelihood programmes will be developed in cooperation with the Union and State governments. Integrated Farming Farmers currently engaged in paddy cultivation are expected to receive better support through integrated farming projects alongside wetland ecosystem conservation. This approach aims to balance agricultural practices with environmental protection. Model Project The Kadalundi community reserve will serve as a model for implementation. The project will be coordinated by the Vadakara range of the Social Forestry division. Rare Bird Sightings The sighting of Common Pochard , a medium-sized diving duck facing extinction threats, has attracted State-level attention. Nearly 10 rare varieties of migratory ducks, including the Ferruginous duck and Eurasian wigeon , were also spotted in the area. UPSC Relevance This initiative is relevant to GS3: Environment and Ecology , specifically focusing on biodiversity conservation, wetland management, and community participation in environmental protection. It also touches upon GS2: Government Policies related to environmental conservation and sustainable development. Key Concepts Community Reserve: Protected areas managed by local communities, balancing conservation with sustainable use.
